Este artigo aborda as características sócio-ambientais do município de Arari-MA e os aspectos referentes à qualidade da água do rio Mearim, apresentando uma avaliação através da análise dos parâmetros físico-químicos e microbiológicos, como possíveis indicadores de alterações ambientais provocadas pela disposição inadequada do lixo às margens do rio, destacando o lançamento “in natura” de resíduos sólidos e líquidos em seu leito, bem como o assoreamento provocado pela retirada da vegetação nativa, além da erosão causada por práticas agrícolas inadequadas.

This paper shows the socioenvironmental characteristics of the municipal district of Arari-MA, Brazil, and the aspects regarding the quality of the water of the Mearim river. showing an evaluation, through the analysis of the physiochemical and microbiological parameters as possible indicators of environmental alterations provoked by the inadequate disposition of the waste in the bank of the river, emphasizing the release in natura of solid and liquid residues in its margins, as well as the ravage provoked by the deforestation and erosion caused by inadequate agricultural practices.
