AVALIAÇÃO DA SUSTENTABILIDADE DO SETOR SUCROALCOOLEIRO: UMA APLICAÇÃO DO BAROMETER OF SUSTAINABILITY NO O MUNICÍPIO DE PEDRAS DE FOGO – PB

Resumo
Um novo paradigma de desenvolvimento surge em meio à crise socioambiental vivenciada pela sociedade, o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. As discussões acerca do tema despertaram para uma visão mais crítica no que se refere à problemática e o papel das atividades produtivas. Neste sentido, as atividades do setor sucroalcooleiro têm apresentado papel fundamental no processo de desenvolvimento das regiões onde estas atividades são preponderantes. Assim, o objetivo do artigo foi avaliar a sustentabilidade do município de Pedras de Fogo na Paraíba, com ênfase nas atividades do setor sucroalcooleiro, a partir do sistema de indicadores Barometer of Sustainability. A metodologia utilizada constituiu-se da utilização de dados secundários para o levantamento de informações relativas ao município, bem como os dados referentes aos indicadores de sustentabilidade para a proposição de um índice. Como resultado, obteve-se um índice de sustentabilidade de 50,23, considerado intermediário na escala do barômetro. Este índice é resultante do baixo nível de renda da população e uma concentração de rendimento considerada preocupante, além do déficit no sistema de abastecimento de água na zona rural e o extensivo período de seca que tem afetado a rentabilidade dos produtores. Bem como de aspectos relacionados à saúde da população no que diz respeito ao uso de insumos agrícolas, a representatividade do setor agropecuário para o PIB do município, a qualidade das águas do principal reservatório da região. SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT OF ETHANOL SECTOR: AN APPLICATION OF THE BAROMETER OF SUSTAINABILITY IN PEDRAS DE FOGO - PB ABSTRACT A new development paradigm emerges amid the socio-environmental crisis lived by society, Sustainable Development. The discussions on the subject awakened to a more critical view regarding the issue and the role of productive activities. In this sense, the activities of this ethanol sector have presented key role in development of the regions where these activities are prevalent. So, the objective of this work was to assess the sustainability of Pedras de Fogo in Paraíba, emphasising the activities of this sector using indicators proposed by Monteiro et al (2008) from the system of indicators Barometer of Sustainability. The methodology consisted of using secondary data for the survey of information regarding the municipality, as well as data on indicators of sustainability for proposing an index. As a result, we obtained a sustainability index of 50.23, considered intermediate scale of the barometer. This index is the result of the low income level of the population and a concentration of income considered alarming, besides the deficit in the system of water supply in rural areas and extensive drought that has affected the profitability of producers. As well as aspects related to the health of the population with regard to the use of agricultural inputs, the representativeness of the agricultural sector to the GDP of the city, the water quality of the region's main reservoir.
