WETLANDS DOMESTIC SEWAGE TREATMENT STUDY ABSTRACT The current scarcity of water resources in the world has attracted the attention of the researchers, making fundamental the development of technologies for the treatment of the sewage generated in the human communities. The wetlands system is one of these technologies, having as one of its most important characteristics the ability to remove the nutrients present in the composition of domestic sewage. This removal occurs thanks to the use of aquatic plants installed in a bed that seeks to artificially simulate the natural floodwaters present on the banks of rivers and lakes. The present work monitored the removal of nutrients, phosphorus and nitrate present in the effluent of a pilot wetlands system that treated a portion of the sewage generated at the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP - SP). This flood was composed of a bed of rectangular surface area (4 m x 1 m) with macrophy of the genus Typha sp. The samples of affluent and effluent from the floodwaters were collected every one hour within the working range, between 8 h and 20 h. The system had a mean removal of phosphorus during winter (44.1 %) and nitrate removal of 36.8 %. In the spring the average reduction of phosphorus and nitrate was 38.9 % and 30.7 %, respectively. Key words: Wetlands; domestic sewage; effluent treatment; low cost.
