A utilização de bens minerais pelo homem é tão antiga quanto a sua historia. O registro da atividade humana busca suas referências iniciais na dependência do homem em relação aos bens minerais. Um estudo da qualidade das águas superficiais foi realizado, em uma empresa mineradora de brita de granito na região central do estado do Tocantins. Foi realizada uma caracterização físico-química e biológica (coliformes). Os resultados mostraram uma variação significativa dos parâmetros amostrados ao longo dos seis meses de estudo, destacando-se a temperatura, a qual variou de 22,6 oC a 35 °C; o pH variando de 5,04 a 8,94; a condutividade elétrica variando de 11,5 a 94,1 μS cm-1; a turbidez variando de 0,90 UNT a 461 UNT; e os coliformes totais e termotolerantes, com presença em determinadas amostras. Estes valores encontrados na amostragem demonstram significativa variação da qualidade ambiental das águas superficiais, na área de influência direta da empresa, demonstrando que ações devem ser tomadas no sentido de diminuir possíveis impactos ambientais advindos das ações mineradoras. The use of mineral resources for the man is so old how much its history. The register of the activity human being searchs its initial references in the dependence of the man in relation to the mineral goods. A study of the quality of superficial waters it was carried through, in a mining company of crushed rock of granite in the central region of the state of the Tocantins. The results had shown a significant variation of the parameters throughout the six months of study. A characterization was carried through physicist-chemistry and biological (coliforms). The results showed a significant variation of the parameters sampled over six months of study, especially the temperature, which ranged from 22.6 oC to 35 °C, pH varying from 5.04 to 8.94, the electrical conductivity varying from 11.5 to 94.1 μS cm-1, the turbidity varying from 0.90 UNT to 461 UNT, and the total coliforms and thermotolerant, with presence in determined samples. These values found in the sampling demonstrate significant variation of the ambient quality of superficial waters in the area of direct influence of the company; action must be taken in the direction to diminish possible happened ambient impacts of the mining actions.
