A substituição de combustíveis fósseis por biocombustíveis vem sendo estimuladas pelos governos, devido à perspectiva do esgotamento das reservas mundiais de petróleo, pelos constantes aumentos dos preços e também pelos impactos ambientais. É com base nestas perspectivas que este trabalho de pesquisa foi realizado, visando efetuar uma busca das informações a esse respeito, expondo principalmente os impactos ambientais, econômicos e sociais dos biocombustíveis. Após a realização da pesquisa, percebeu-se que existem muitas informações convergentes quanto ao lado positivo da substituição do petróleo pelos biocombustíveis, como também foi detectada uma série de pesquisas que exibem informações que são adversas. Essas pesquisas alertam para uma série de problemas que devem ser tratados antes de uma substituição total visando à sustentabilidade, tais como: incentivo a agricultura familiar; delimitação do tamanho das propriedades; formação de cooperativas; criação de uma rede nacional de milhares de micro-usinas integradas a partir de cooperativas de pequenos e médios produtores rurais; entre outras. The substitution of fossil fuels by biofuels is being stimulated by governments because of the perspective of exhaustion of world oil reserves, in consequence of constant price rising and also because of environmental impacts. It is based on this perspective that this research work was realized, aiming to develop a search of information related to it, mainly exposing environmental, economical and social impacts of fossil fuels and biofuels that naturally are the substitutes of these. Through the research developed, it was noticed that there are many convergent information related to the positive side of substituting oil by biofuels, as also was detected a set of researches that show adverse information. These researches alert to a set of problems that must be solved before a total substitution aiming sustainability, such as: familiar agriculture incentive; delimitation of properties’ size; formation of cooperatives; creation of a national network of thousands of micro-plants integrated by cooperatives of small and medium rural producers; and so on.
