Este estudo analisou, no período entre 1930 até a implementação do Estado Novo, os fatores que levaram a criação da Capoeira Regional, momento no qual Getúlio Vargas passou a interferir na educação e na cultura do país. A pesquisa se pautou numa crítica historiográfica, baseando-se nos estudos de Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault e Theodor Adorno. Questionou-se se o surgimento da Capoeira Regional afastou esta prática do restante da cultura popular ou tratou-se de um processo civilizador que a modernizou e fez sobreviver naquele momento histórico. Porém, como todo processo civilizador traz modernização há nele presente um grande componente de barbárie. Palavras Chaves: Capoeira; Estado Novo; Civilização; Barbárie.

This study analyzed in the period from 1930 to the implementation of the Estado Novo, the factors that had taken to the creation of the Capoeira Regional, when Getúlio Vargas started to interfere in the education, and culture of the country. The research is based on the studies of Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault e Theodor Adorno. It was questioned if the appearing of the Capoeira Regional moved away this practice from the popular culture or was a civilizing process that modernized it and allowed it surviving at that historical moment. However, as all civilizating process brings modernization, there is in it a great component of barbarity. KEYWORDS: Capoeira; Civilizatio; Barbarity.
